Loie Fuller

Loie Fuller is a French/American restaurant inspired by the Art Nouveau dancer and the many beautiful French and Belgian Period Eateries. Located on the west side of Providence, the restaurant was designed and built in 2007, long before the area flourished into the foodie/hipster enclave that it has now become. We teamed up with the owner to create a public space that would draw “east siders” who were not used to visiting the Olneyville area to eat, draw visitors to Providence, and still feel comfortable for neighbors and locals to visit in work clothes on a weekly basis.

The entire building was gutted- new kitchen, HVAC, new ceilings floors and walls. The tile floor was custom designed and meticulously assembled out of centimeter pieces of tile from Lebanon. The upholstery was ordered from France, the bar is a section of an antique bar whose original home was a Masonic Temple in New York City and soffits were built to hide ducts and create subtle lighting.

The paintings in the main room were a surprise gift to the owner. The waitresses, and bartenders served as modern day muses for the portraits throughout, true to the period tradition of dancers and barmaids who modeled for and inspired the Latrecks of the era.

The murals in the bar room and the woodwork there represents the more abstract genre of Art Nouveau style referencing the Gaudi’s asymmetrical architecture and the organic Metropolitain Subway entrance ironwork. In the dining room 19 foot custom-built decorative wood trim adds symmetry and the layout conveys the more rigid approach to Art Nouveau. It is the complement to the asymmetric and wildly playful nouveau of the bar.

The owners have paired their restaurant with a farm that grows organic produce and free range meets. A beautiful menu, coupled with the formal yet comfortable interior design, has made the restaurant a go to for both the anniversary dinner and the beer after work… as well as consistently voted “the most romantic” restaurant in Providence.
